Fiddes House 2003

New house Birkenhead, Auckland.

A Street Wall
A Cantilevered Platform
A Floating/ slipping Roof

An urban tree-house. Building hard to the northern street edge creates an immediate public edge to the house, through which gaps occur to allow surprise views through the house to the sea and the city.
The street wall has a floating roof above, the gap allows in the sun and sets the bulk of the house further back from the street edge, overhanging the 45 degree slope and projecting over the pohutukawa.
The roof is conceived of as a single, undulating form, which when viewed from the sea appears to be ‘slipping’ across the cliff face.
